For those who have not yet come across it, may I recommend the excellent report from the Faith and Order Commission of the Church of England entitled “Men and women in marriage”, available at:

Father,
Do you think it could be the case that the seeds of gay marriage were sown long ago, when the government began to liberalize divorce law? If people just see marriage now as a secular contract, rather than an indissoluble bond wrought by God, by which man and wife become one flesh, then I suppose this development makes sense. What do you think?

Yes, I do think the rot set in a long time ago, as far as civil law goes; but the Church has failed to see where these developments have been leading, and so failed to oppose them in a timely and effective way.
