Field of Dreams: if you build it, they will come!

General Synod

As I expected, given the opportunity to put off an evil day, Synod has taken it. I cannot help thinking that the reason some proponents of women bishops do not want the House of Bishops’ very mild amendment included in the Measure itself is because it would then bind their successors. They can give every assurance that “You can trust us,” but as we have seen in relation to the Act of Synod, in a few years their successors will be able to say (following their example), “We are not bound by any promises our predecessors made. We were not there.” Unless the Bishops hold firm and insist on guarantees in the Measure itself, how can they expect us to take seriously any provision made in a Code of Practice?
