Field of Dreams: if you build it, they will come!

Ordinariate and Society

Some rather unkind comments have been flying around between advocates of the Ordinariate and advocates of the Society of Ss. Wilfrid and Hilda. I know that there are not a few who think that the Ordinariate will prove a dead-end or cul-de-sac, and equally there are others who think the same about the Society. Only time will tell who will be proved right. Meanwhile, I don’t think anyone should be actively desiring the failure of either proposal. We need to keep in touch, we need to support one another, whatever our misgivings about the other path.

Supporters of the Society might like to consider that the establishment of the Ordinariate could aid their own cause. At least they will be able to say to Synod, “Look, we could have joined the Ordinariate, but we did not, we remained loyal to the CofE. What reward for our loyalty are you ready to offer?” That approach may even now evoke a more generous provision than a Code of Practice. Who knows?

If this still meets with a rebuff (as I fear it will), there must still be a welcome in the Ordinariate, and the urge to say “I told you so” must be resisted. Let us all wish well to one another.

Oremus invicem, as Ronald Knox once put it.

Comment by Simon Cotton

Hear, hear. Now, or in the future, is not the time for recriminations or gloating. As always, it should be a time of prayer, faith and trust in the Lord.
